The costume Institute is a collection of more than 35,000 costumes and accessories from all five continent. Its represent seven centuries of fashion, from dresses , costume, men's clothing, women's clothing, children's clothing from the fifteen till now. the costume Institute does two exhibition annually plus the Met Gala.The first exhibition is called fashion in art. It is a tour that shows the landmarks of the costume history, it examine the different materials used in the sixth century through modern eyes. the highlight are the clothing in stone, wood, paint and other media. the second tour is the Costume: The Art of The Dress.It is a tour guide by an audio recording of Sarah Jessica Parker that showcases the historical costumes throughout the entire Museum's gallery.
History of the department of the Costume Institute.
the institute began in 1937 as the Museum of costume Art and led by Playhouse founder Irene Lewisohn.In 1946, the fashion industry gave financial support to the museum and merged it with the Metropolitan Museum of Art as The Costume Institute. the legendary fashion Arbiter Diana Vreeland was the special consultant form 1972 until her death in 1989

She created memorable exposition like the World of Balenciaga(1973), the Glory of Russian Costume(1976) and Vanity Fair(1977).In 1989, Richard Martin took her place, with the support of Harold Koda and started a rotating cycle of thematic exhibition. Infra-Apparel,Waist Not, The Four Seasons and Cubism in Fashion. The recent Thematic Exhibition of the Institute included Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy(2008), PUNK: Chaos to Couture(2013), China: Through the Looking class(2015). Recent mono graphic exhibition included Channel(2005), Poiret: King of fashion(2007) and Alexander Mcqueen: Savage Beauty(2011).Each May, the annual Met Gala benefit take place with ticket that cost 25,000$ if you're not on the list and 10,000$ if you are on the list. It help to fund the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The met gala helps to showcase the string exhibition under the leadership of Anna wintour.
